Dank Memes and Cache Monet

Throughout English class this year there already have been many great moments, and some of them were during class and some not. Just the other day After class had gotten out and me and Jordan were walking down the hall we were stopped by Ben Johnson, who told us that we should go to Room 113 and look at the whiteboards. To our surprise the back whiteboard was covered with hashtags and memes. A Pepe face and #Yeepe covered the entire left half of the board. As we were admiring the handiwork of Ben, Afua walked into the room and told us that she also had a hand in creating the meme masterpiece in the back of the room. Jordan wanted in on the memes so he started to draw a meme of Tobey Maguire. As he worked on his meme a thought can to me how can these whiteboards be both the home to intellectual thought and the disappointment that is memes and the internet culture of today.

Another experience like this is the one when I was introduced to the world of Cache Monet, which stupidly sounds like cash money. This website is home to a collection of backgrounds and main objects. These two components comprise of items or idea from internet culture that are somehow linked together. This can be the most convoluted or obscure connection, but it does exist. These images that change about every 5 to 10 seconds have a very strange position that is somewhere between intellectually innovative and completely brain cell killing. The way I was introduced to Cache Monet was completely incidental. The first day of class Mr. Yee had to step out of class to do something, so Luke decide to do something pretty stupid in my opinion. He went up to Mr. Yee’s computer and typed in the url to Cache Monet and started to play it. When Mr. Yee walked back into the room something very strange happened. He looked at his computer and tried to figure out what was going on. Mr. Yee then started to explain what was going on with the cycling images. The images were in fact the ideas or things that were linked to each other somehow. This blew my mind. I was constricting my thoughts to the conventional scholastics that we were taught in school. I could have been thinking on another level, but instead I was only the normal school grind. It confused me how this could have happened.

The internet culture has been changed in my eyes. What starts out as a joke or small ridicule about someone can turn into the most popular thing in the matter of a couple of days. All people have to do is view or up vote something and it become the greatest thing from sliced bread. It is baffling. How could someone pretending to drive a car become a dance, and then it is done by everyone that uses the internet. How can a song and face become the cause of massive frustration. The Whip and the Troll Face have become common things to internet culture, but it is just a bunch of jokes.

Right?

My opinion of internet culture has changed with the Cache Monet experience. The way that these images are changed from their intended use can be a bad thing, or now a good thing. The Dank Pepe meme can really be used a image that displays how we feel when in a great despair albeit through a cartoon frog. The Whip’s creation shows the love of cars and driving in America. The Troll Face has become an image of someone causing frustration to others. It is amazing how the world can create this inside jokes with itself that are really a good example of human experience. Even when we are just joking around during our free time we still create something that could be useful to the world. Somehow in our free time we create memes and things on the internet that can be enlightening to people and give them a new look at certain ideas and philosophies. The random internet culture can expand your knowledge, bring people together, and educate. It can also be a toxic enviroment with hate, but I like to be optimistic. I did not think about it until Mr. Yee said it, but now it is cool to see how the internet can be more than a memified horrorland of idiots, jokes, and pets.
